African elephants are the elephants of the family Loxodonta (Greek for 'diagonal sided tooth'), comprising of twoextant species: the African bramble elephant and the littler African woodland elephant. Loxodonta is one of the two current genera in the family Elephantidae.
Fossil individuals from Loxodonta have been discovered just in Africa, where they grew in the center Pliocene.
